About Us

The Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home is located south of Whiteclay, Nebraska. We are a 60 bed nursing facility owned by the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home, Inc., and managed by Native American Health Management (NAHM). We are delighted to bring family members closer to their loved ones, and have been planning this facility for over 8 years.

Who is the owner of the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home (OSLNH)?

The owner is the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home Inc., a chartered entity of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.   It is a separate legal entity.   Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home’s Board of Directors are the governing body for the nursing home. The Board will comply with the responsibilities required by federal and state laws to establish and oversee the implementation and ongoing operation of the facility.

Who is Native American Health Management?

Native American Health Management (NAHM) is a Nebraska-based company that has over 25 years of experience in managing nursing homes. NAHM is under contract with Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home and has exclusive responsibility for the day-to-day operation, management and maintenance of the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home. NAHM brings needed expertise and experience to manage the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home.

When is the facility expected to open?

It is expected to open in April, 2016

How many residents will reside at the facility?

The facility is licensed to care for 60 residents. It is a combination of private and semi-private rooms. It measures almost 52,000 square feet. The design is state-of-the-art. The facility will have new and modern furnishings. All resident will have windows in their room. There will also be excellent resident therapy services. The facility will also be Lakota culturally sensitive.

Will residents have to pay while living at Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home?

Yes, all residents will have to pay. There are two primary sources for payment – Medicaid and their own money.

If an elder is found eligible for Medicaid, and meets the medical requirements for nursing home care established by the state of Nebraska, then the Medicaid program will pay for their care at the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home. The resident might have a portion to pay if they are on Medicaid.

If a person is not eligible for Medicaid, then that person must use their own funds to pay for their care at the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home.

All admissions must be approved by the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home administrator.

How do people know if they are eligible for Medicaid?

Medicaid is an assistance program administered by the State of Nebraska. An application must be completed and sent to the state agency for an eligibility determination. Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home staff will be able to assist persons applying for Medicaid.

Will only tribal elders who are members of a federally recognized tribe be admitted to Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home?

Probably. We are getting clarification about spouses of a tribal member.

When the facility opens, what are the plans for admitting tribal elders?

The Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home Board and NAHM are working on plans and processes for admission. When it opens, there will be a focus on transferring tribal members who are now living in other nursing facilities. We believe it is important to bring tribal members back to Pine Ridge so they can be close to their relatives. We expect the facility will fill very quickly.

What will be the annual revenues at the facility?

At full capacity, annual revenues will be approximately $8.7 million in new federal dollars.

How many jobs will the facility create?

Approximately 100 – some will be full time and others will be part time.

What is the salary that will be paid to the staff hired at Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home?

We will be posting most of the positions on the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home website and providing fact sheets to be available at the district college centers and at the Tribal office.

Will there be an employee benefit package at Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home?

Yes. The Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home will have employee health, dental, vision, life insurance, vacation and sick leave. A retirement and long-term disability program will also be offered. Employees will be responsible to pay a relatively small portion of the benefit costs. The actual amount is still being worked out.

Will there be hiring preference policies?

Yes, for qualified personnel, the preference policies will be:

  1. Resident Indians living on the Pine Ridge reservation without regard to tribal affiliation;
  2. Non-resident Indians;
  3. Non-Indians

  1. Certified Indian-owned firms, whose principal places of business are located within the exterior boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation, without regard to tribal affiliation;
  2. Certified Indian-owned firms, without regard to the location of their principal places of business;
  3. Non-certified firms with some Indian ownership, whose principal places of business are located within the exterior boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation, without regard to tribal affiliation.
  4. Non-certified firms with some Indian ownership, without regard to the location of their principal places of business;
  5. Other non-certified firms.
